DESCRIPTION: Length up to 27mm. A variable beetle that can have specimens that are dark grey throughout with dark legs or more usually examples that have reddish-orange legs, reddish elytra and dark reddish antennae. The narrow pronotum bears sharp small lateral projections. Like most members of this group the eyes are large and bulbous. BEHAVIOUR: A clumsy flier. The larvae develop in the damaged timber of diseased deciduous trees. DISTRIBUTION: A fairly frequent species of woodland in southern Britain but becoming scarcer in the north and west. HABITAT: Woodland clearings and edges where there are flowers on which the adults can feed. PERIOD: May to June. |
